ANDAMAN SEA PILOT - SECOND EDITION

This website reflects the Second [print] Edition (2007/2008) of the cruising guide, Andaman Sea Pilot.

This edition extends the scope of the book all the way to Australia. The Darwin to Singapore chapter focuses on significant anchorages on the Australia — S.E. Asia cruising route.

While the ENTIRE CONTENTS of the print edition are contained in this website, the charts of anchorages are reproduced at low resolution and in much smaller size than in the print edition.

Major Revisions

East Coast of Malaysia and East Malaysia (Borneo)
When compiling the First Edition of Andaman Sea Pilot, the authors had not visited this coastline for some time. They put that right for the Second Edition. The expanded Malaysian chapter is bang up to date with many new anchorages, shoreside facilities and more.

The Andaman Islands and The Mergui Archipelago
These chapters have been completely re-written based on the research and experience of a yachtsman who has spent the last few years exploring and running top-notch charters in the area. New charts, spectacular photographs, walks and more.
  Vietnam
Following Sunsail’s opening of a new base in Vietnam, Andaman Sea Pilot (recommended by Sunsail to their charter clients) now includes a selected number of anchorages in this new destination.

Updates

A lot has happened since the first issue of Andaman Sea Pilot. New marinas, marinas under development, new resorts, new restaurants and other onshore facilities, changes wrought by the 2004 tsunami (though fortunately few of these) and more. And of course a few amendments/corrections thanks to our readers. Every chapter has been thoroughly overhauled for the Second Edition.

Photography

While the main focus of the Second Edition continues to be accurate, usable information for cruising and charter yachts, readers will notice a quantum leap in the quality, variety and relevance of the photography.

From the authors

This guide encompasses approximately 1.3 million square miles of some of the best cruising grounds in the world.

From the Andaman Islands in the west, to the Gulf of Thailand and South China Sea in the east, 13 degrees of Latitude and 28 degrees of longitude, are described. This entire region lies north of the equator in tropical zones. We have also recommended a route planning guide from Darwin to Singapore.

The Andaman Sea which forms the eastern Indian Ocean is connected to the western Pacific through the Malacca straits and the South China Sea.

Seven countries are included: Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia and India's Andaman Islands are all covered in detail.

We also cover the best east-west routes through southern Indonesia.

All the information required to pass through or cruise and explore by yacht is presented in an easy-to-reference style.

The authors have compiled the information over more than two decades of personal experience in the region and have invited a number of well qualified voyagers to update facilities and opportunities in this rapidly developing cruising destination.

The best designers have been engaged to provide detailed, helpful and accurate charts, together with quality layout, with rugged serviceable binding. The result is a volume that should be on the bridge of every vessel plying these waters.

This part of Asia is continuing to develop very quickly and more and more facilities are being built to cater for the growing demands of waterborne visitors.

New information is critical to the regular updating of the information within.

The guide will be published every two years to ensure that sailors have confidence in the advice given.

The authors welcome comments which can be e-mailed to: pilot@image-asia.com

With special thanks to: Paul Johnson (Myanmar and Andamans), Simon James, Ian Hewitt and Morgan Hayes (Sunsail), Ed Shiels, Jimmy Lake Blee, Bernard Berteau, Ted Grinstead and Capt. Mike Walker, Jean-Claude Racine, Bianca Hein and Scott Neuman for their valued contributions.
